How to actually balance the numbers.

The right order, the right dose, and the wait times between adjustments. Fix the chemistry in 24 hours.

The one rule that matters

Adjust in this order, always: Alkalinity → pH → Chlorine → Everything else.

Alkalinity is your pH buffer. Fix TA first and pH becomes easy to hold. Skip TA and adjust pH directly and it’ll swing back within a day. Chlorine gets added after pH is right because pH determines chlorine effectiveness.

The step-by-step

All dosing math below assumes a 10,000-gallon pool. Scale up or down proportionally. Test after each adjustment before adding more — chemistry moves slower than people expect.

  1. 01
    Fix Total Alkalinity (target 80–120 ppm)
    Too low? Add baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). ~1.5 lb raises TA by 10 ppm per 10k gallons. Add slowly with pump running; wait 6+ hours before retesting.

    Too high? Add muriatic acid. ~1 quart lowers TA by ~10 ppm per 10k gallons. Add slowly to the deep end with pump running. Wait 24 hours and retest — this one takes longer to settle.

    Fix pH (target 7.4–7.6)
    Too high? Add muriatic acid. ~10 oz lowers pH by ~0.2 per 10k gallons at TA 100. Wait 4 hours, retest.

    Too low? Add soda ash (sodium carbonate). ~4 oz raises pH by ~0.2 per 10k gallons. Wait 4 hours, retest.

    Aeration (running the spa jets, waterfall, or fountain) also raises pH naturally over time — sometimes you can fix low pH by just turning on the water feature.
  3. 03
    Fix Free Chlorine (target 2–4 ppm)
    Too low? Add liquid chlorine (12.5%) or cal-hypo (65%). ~10 oz of liquid chlorine raises FC by ~1 ppm per 10k gallons. Add with pump running, spread around the perimeter.

    Too high? Wait. Sunlight burns off chlorine at ~2 ppm/day if your CYA is in range. Or use sodium thiosulfate (chlorine neutralizer) if you need to swim right now.

    Long-term: chlorine tabs in a floater or an inline chlorinator do the daily topping-up. Don’t throw tabs directly into the skimmer if it’s off — they’ll etch the plaster underneath.
  4. 04
    Fix Cyanuric Acid / Stabilizer (target 30–50 ppm)
    Too low? Add stabilizer granules (pure CYA). Broadcast in a sock in front of a return jet, or dissolve in a bucket of warm water. Slow to dissolve — takes 3–5 days for the number to fully move.

    Too high? No chemical lowers CYA. Only fix is to drain and refill some water. Rough math: draining 25% of your pool and refilling with fresh water drops CYA by ~25%.
  5. 05
    Fix Calcium Hardness (target 200–400 ppm)
    Too low? Add calcium chloride flakes. ~1.25 lb raises CH by 10 ppm per 10k gallons. Broadcast slowly; the water may cloud briefly.

    Too high? Same as CYA — drain and refill. Or, if your fill water is very high in calcium (common in Houston), consider a hose filter for refills.

The pairs you never mix

  • Chlorine + muriatic acid — never in the same bucket, never within an hour in the pool. Creates chlorine gas.
  • Cal-hypo + trichlor tabs — never in the same feeder or the same bucket. Can literally catch fire.
  • Any two dry chemicals — always dissolve one at a time in water before adding to the pool.

General rule: add one chemical, wait for it to circulate (30 min minimum, ideally longer), then add the next. Chemistry doesn’t reward speed.
